One of the number questions I get asked when it comes to family pictures is what do we wear?
Choosing what to wear for your family photos can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be! The right colors can make your pictures timeless, cohesive, and flattering for everyone. Here’s a guide to help you choose the perfect color palette for your next photo session.

🌿 1. Start with Your Location
It sets the tone for your outfits.
Outdoor/Nature sessions (fields, parks, beaches): Soft, natural tones like cream, tan, olive, navy, dusty blue, or muted rust look beautiful.
Urban settings (city streets, modern architecture): Bold colors or black and white outfits stand out nicely against concrete or brick.
Studio sessions Neutrals and coordinated tones photograph best — think whites, beiges, or soft grays.

🎨2. Choose a Color Palette
I find that 3 colors are best and offers more flexibility with everyone's wardrobe. You can then mix in complimentary colors.
Here are some classic family color palettes:
Neutral & Timeless: Cream, beige, white, and soft gray.
Warm & Cozy: Mustard, rust, olive, and navy.
Cool & Coastal: Soft blue, white, and khaki.
Earthy & Natural: Sage, terracotta, and ivory.
Elegant & Classic: Navy, blush, and white.
📷 Image idea: A color wheel or lay your clothing pieces out together on the bed to see how they look.
