Planning & Scheduling Your Photo Session: When Should You Book?
One question I wish I got asked more often is: “When should I plan my next photo session?” or “How far in advance should I book?”The truth is, planning ahead can make a huge difference—whether you’re dreaming of a glowing maternity shoot, classic wedding day, a sweet family session, or those precious newborn photos you’ll cherish forever. Every session type has its own ideal timeline and knowing when to book helps you secure your preferred date, the perfect location, and the best light of the season. Also keep in mind if you are attempting to get multiple families together for a large group photo. This is not the time to try to plan a last-minute quick photo session. Allow time for everyone to plan ahead, get the time off, so no one is feeling rushed. You want everyone to be available and relaxed for the session.Let’s break it down so you can plan with confidence!
📸 Family SessionsFamily sessions tend to be the most flexible, but they still fill up quickly—especially during peak seasons. Ideally, you’ll want to book 4–6 weeks in advance. If you’re hoping for fall foliage or spring blooms, booking even earlier guarantees that you get those beautiful seasonal backdrops. You may also want to have a backup day in mind just in case the weather doesn't cooperate and you may need to reschedule due to rain. Spring: Book in February or March for April/May sessions.Fall: This is the busiest season of the entire year. Book in August or September for October/November dates to ensure you snag the perfect weekend and the prettiest colors.
🎄 Holiday Minis Holiday minis sell out quickly every year. If you love those cozy, festive scenes, make sure to book as soon as dates are released! Tryon Palace starts to decorate around the first of November; so this is the perfect time to get those photos for the Christmas cards!
🎓 Senior Photos Senior sessions are best scheduled late spring through early summer. Booking early ensures you have enough time to choose outfits, pick meaningful locations, and avoid the back-to-school rush. Check out my blog post for more details on Preparing For Your Senior Photos.
👶 Newborn Sessions This is such a special category, and timing really matters! For newborn sessions, you want to book while you’re still pregnant—typically during your second trimester. I’ll pencil in your due date, and then once your baby arrives, we’ll finalize your session date. If you’re hoping for those dreamy, sleepy, curled-up poses, the sessions are best done within the first 1–3 weeks of life. (I’ll be creating a full newborn blog soon—stay tuned for more details!)
💍 Engagement Sessions Engagement photos are such a fun and meaningful way to celebrate your love story. Most couples choose to schedule their session 6–12 months before the wedding, but as soon as you’re engaged is never too early! Booking ahead gives you time to use the images for save-the-dates, wedding websites, and décor. 👰 Bridal PortraitsBridal sessions are usually scheduled 4–8 weeks before the wedding. This timing allows: Your dress to be fitted and ready Your hair and makeup trial to be coordinated for the same day Enough time to print and display your bridal portrait at the reception if you’d like Booking early ensures we have the perfect location and lighting for those classic, elegant bridal shots. 💒 Weddings Weddings should be booked as early as possible, ideally 9–18 months in advance. Weekends (especially spring and fall) fill up quickly, and booking early guarantees your date is secured. Once you’re on the calendar, we can start planning your engagement session and timeline together.
